Walhalla Fish Hatchery
Operated by the South Carolina Department of Natural
Resources (SCDNR), this fish hatchery is one of five in South
Carolina serving a vital role in the management of our state’s
fishery resources. The Walhalla State Fish Hatchery is unique
in that it is the only state hatchery involved in the culture of
trout, a coldwater species. Trout are produced here in support
of recreational fishing. When they reach an appropriate size,
the trout are stocked wherever suitable coldwater habitat
occurs in South Carolina.

FISHING
Long Creek Falls serves as something of a landmark for the
paddling community since it spills almost directly into the
Chattooga River. The multi-tiered, 50-foot cascade and
accompanying plunge pool offer a nice break from the Chattooga’s
difficult Section IV, flowing briskly nearby. Fortunately, hikers can
also enjoy the view after a moderate, hour-long hike. Be aware
that this is not an official Forest Service trail, thus there are no
permanent markings, so carefully follow the directions listed
below.

Miuka Falls is one of two falls you can reach by hiking the
Winding Stairs Trail, the other being Secret Falls. Miuka Falls
is a 75-foot waterfall tucked away on a spur trail off the
popular Winding Stairs Trail makes the journey into Miuka
Falls among the best in Oconee County. In fact, this easy,
45-minute hike bustles with birds, small animals, and lively
wildflowers beneath a dense canopy of hardwoods. More
gently graded than stepped (as the name implies), beginners
can easily venture along this trail and experience Miuka Falls,
although thick foliage at the falls makes getting a clear view a
bit of a challenge.
